Each year, the TRB Transportation Law Workshop provides an opportunity to meet and listen to federal, state and local lawyers and private transportation practitioners from across the country. In-depth sessions on key transportation legal issues are delivered by leading practicing professionals, including senior counsel from the Federal Highway Administration, Federal Transit Administration, and Federal Railroad Administration. On July 26, Bernadette participated in the session “Year in Review: Developments in Law and Practice of Eminent Fields and Land Use 2020-2022”. She and her collaborators discussed recent developments and emerging issues in the field of estate law and valuation, including SCOTUS Cedar Point Nursery; the use of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; assessment of inverse interests on roads, roads and highways; and the separation of water rights, which results, inter alia, from withdrawals. This meeting will be a roundtable with senior officials on the USDOT secretary`s priorities for 2020 and beyond. Priorities include the DOT initiative for rural areas; work on areas of opportunity; enable reforms; and grade crossing safety. This session will also allow participants to hear the administration`s views on the readmission of land transport. January 2020 This Human Trafficking Panel will be comprised of DOT management and members of the DOT Advisory Committee on Human Trafficking (ACHT), representing transportation stakeholders across the industry. January is declared National Trafficking Prevention and Awareness Month every year, and 2020 marks the 20th anniversary of the passage of the Law on the Protection of Victims of Human Trafficking, the landmark legislation on trafficking in human beings.

Leaders from across the transport sector will stress the importance for all transport actors to play an active and concrete role in the fight against trafficking in human beings. On July 25, Christine served as a panelist on the topic “Avoiding Disputes by Drafting Understandable and Enforceable Contracts.” Nancy acted as moderator. The panel discussed the complications of drafting and interpreting contracts for state and local transport authorities, as well as the legal issues considered when resolving disputes, and provided practical advice on steps agencies can take to reduce the likelihood of future problems. USDOT is working on several fronts to carefully manage the use of automation technology in the transportation space. This session will introduce participants to the USDOT senior officials who lead the DOT automation technology initiatives. Attendees will learn about USDOT`s views on how it handles advances in transportation technology and what to expect next. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C., Jan. 12-16.
